About Kousic

Born into a distinguished musical family in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, Kousic Sen was immersed in the world of Indian classical music even before his birth. His mother, Smt. Tapati Sen, a renowned North Indian classical vocalist and A-Grade artist of All India Radio, and his father, Late Shri P. L. Sen, nurtured his early passion for rhythm and melody.

Kousic began learning the tabla informally under his father’s guidance and later received formal training from Pandit Manik Pal of the Farrukhabad Gharana. Demonstrating prodigious talent from a very young age, he was encouraged by his parents to broaden his knowledge under Prof. Biswanath Bose, a distinguished disciple of Pandit Kanthe Maharaj of the Banaras Gharana. After the sudden passing of Prof. Bose, Kousic came under the tutelage of the legendary maestro Pandit Kumar Bose, whose artistry continues to inspire him. Notably, Kousic is Pandit Kumar Bose’s first disciple to have undergone the traditional Gandha Bandhan ceremony.

He also received invaluable guidance from Pandit Jayanta Bose, whose mentorship helped him explore not only the depths of classical tradition but also the global musical landscape.

A graded artist of All India Radio and National Television since a tender age, Kousic excelled in numerous national competitions, earning blessings and admiration from legendary musicians, critics, and audiences worldwide. Following his graduation in Accountancy, he chose to dedicate himself fully to music, embarking on an international performing career in 1988.

Today, Kousic Sen is recognized as an accomplished tabla virtuoso whose artistry bridges tradition and innovation, carrying forward the rich legacy of the Banaras Gharana while engaging with diverse musical traditions on the world stage
